After the last Valentine’s DIY involving embroidery with buttercream, these heart pom pom bookmarks feel like a free pass in the halls of DIY. All you need is a little yarn, a pair of scissors, and a sprinkling of love and you’ve got yourself the cutest homemade valentine to hand out at school. These heart pom pom bookmarks are the kind of project that can be made up while watching The Lion King on Disney + and are so so cheap when you divide up the cost of a couple skeins of yarn by a couple dozen kids in elementary school. And can we say, U.N.I.Q.U.E.?!!! They’re cute and fluffy and reusable and full of all the things that make our hearts flutter this time of year. Just make sure you park your project somewhere where you can easily vacuum up all of the leftover scraps of yarn.
What you’ll need:
Step One: Start by wrapping the yarn around 3 fingers width.
Step Two: Remove wrapped yarn from fingers and cut a long length of yarn. Tie that yarn string securely around the center of the pom pom, leaving one end long (like a tail) so that it can be the part that sits in the center spine of the book.
Step Three: Use the scissors to cut all of the yarn loops free.
Step Four: Now the trimming of the hedges begins. It’s going to feel a little “too much”, but I promise you that a tight trim looks good on a heart pom pom bookmark.
Step Five: Use the long tail to hold the pom pom securely in place as you trim the heart down to desired shape. Start with the bottom and get that looking nice and trim before moving to the top.
Step Six: Trim the top down and use the scissors to trim the dip of the heart down super short. Keep shaping until you’ve got it looking the way you want it. There’s no fine science here. As you cut, you’ll find your groove and it becomes quite therapeutic.
Use varying shades of pink and red for Valentine’s day gifts, or go colorful and use up any skeins of yarn you have laying around the house.
