Summer Family Vacation Ideas That Filled Our Hearts This Year

summer family vacation ideasSummer Family Vacation Ideas That Filled Our Hearts This Year

If you’re searching for summer family vacation ideas, I hope this post feels like you’re sitting across the table with a cup of coffee while I tell you about the places that made this season so special.

Every summer looks a little different for our family, but one thing stays the same—we try to create margin for adventure. Not because we need extravagant vacations, but because we’ve learned that stepping away from everyday routines creates space for some of our sweetest memories.

This year we traveled to several incredible places, each one offering something unique. Some trips were filled with laughter and friendship, others reminded us to slow down, and a few brought us back to places that already feel like part of our family’s story.

Looking back through all the photos, I realized my favorite memories weren’t necessarily the perfectly planned moments. They were the bike rides after dinner, the conversations during long road trips, afternoons spent floating in the water, and sunsets that made us all stop talking for just a minute.

If you’re planning next year’s travels—or squeezing in one last getaway before summer comes to an end—these are three destinations our family absolutely loved.

San Antonio family vacationSan Antonio Family Vacation | A Hill Country Getaway with Friends

One of my favorite summer family vacation ideas this year didn’t require a long flight or weeks of planning.

Our trip to the Texas Hill Country was exactly what my heart needed.

There’s something so fun about packing up the car for a road trip. Before we even arrived, we had already laughed more than we had all week. Those conversations on the drive are honestly some of my favorite parts of traveling.

We stayed at the Hyatt Hill Country, and from the moment we checked in, it felt like vacation had officially begun. The kids couldn’t wait to spend the afternoon floating the lazy river while the rest of us soaked up the sunshine and enjoyed slowing down for a few days.

One afternoon we grabbed paddle boards and spent hours on the water. Another evening we got to enjoy a Flo Rida concert, which made the trip even more memorable. It was one of those unexpected moments that everyone kept talking about afterward.

As wonderful as the resort was, my favorite part of this trip wasn’t a specific activity.

It was getting to spend uninterrupted time with dear friends.

Life moves quickly, and it’s easy for conversations to get squeezed into the margins of busy schedules. This trip gave us the opportunity to laugh together, encourage one another, and simply enjoy each other’s company.

I came home feeling rested, encouraged, and reminded how refreshing it is to intentionally make time for the people God has placed in your life.

If you’ve been around here for a while, you probably already know how much I love Nantucket.

It’s one of those places that somehow feels both exciting and familiar every single time we visit.

The moment we board the ferry, everything changes. The pace slows down. The air feels different. It’s almost like the island quietly invites you to leave your to-do list behind for a few days.

One of my favorite traditions is renting bikes and riding into town.

The streets are lined with beautiful hydrangeas, charming cottages, overflowing flower boxes, and little shops that seem made for wandering. Everywhere you look feels like a postcard.

Of course, no visit feels complete without stopping by the lighthouse. It’s become one of those places we revisit every year, and I love seeing how much our kids have grown in each photo we’ve taken there over the years.

One evening we took a sunset boat ride, and it quickly became one of my favorite memories of the entire summer. Watching the sun disappear over the water while everyone sat quietly together reminded me why I love traveling so much.

Nantucket has a way of helping you slow down.

It’s not about checking attractions off a list. It’s about enjoying simple moments together—walking the beach, browsing local shops, eating fresh seafood, and taking in the beauty around you.

Every visit adds another chapter to our family’s story, and I already know we’ll keep returning for years to come.

No list of our favorite summer family vacation ideas would ever feel complete without Seaside.

We’ve been coming here for years, and somewhere along the way it stopped feeling like a vacation destination and started feeling like home.

Every summer brings the same excitement as we unpack our bags, hop on our bikes, and settle into familiar routines.

The days are beautifully simple.

We spend hours in the ocean until everyone’s hair is salty and our towels are covered in sand. We wander through our favorite little shops, stop for snow cones almost every afternoon, and stay on the beach just long enough to catch another incredible sunset.

Those traditions might sound small, but they’ve become some of the moments I treasure most.

As our kids get older, I realize these summers won’t last forever. That makes every beach walk, every family dinner, and every sunset feel even more meaningful.

There’s something incredibly special about returning to a place that already holds years of memories while making room for brand-new ones.

Seaside has become part of our family’s story, and I honestly can’t imagine a summer without it.

Seaside Florida 2Why Summer Family Vacations Matter More Than Ever

As I look back on this summer, I’m reminded that the destinations themselves are only part of the story.

The real memories were made in the ordinary moments.

Morning coffee before everyone else woke up.

Long drives filled with conversation.

Watching the kids race toward the ocean.

Bike rides through flower-filled streets.

Laughing with friends until late at night.

Standing together to watch another sunset.

Those are the moments I find myself returning to over and over again.

Travel has a beautiful way of reminding us to be present. It invites us to slow down, put our phones away, and notice the people sitting right beside us.

If you’re looking for summer family vacation ideas, my encouragement is simple: don’t worry so much about finding the perfect destination.

Find a place where your family can slow down.

Leave room for unplanned adventures.

Say yes to the sunset walk.

Take the family photo, even if everyone’s a little sandy.

Stop for the snow cone.

Stay in the ocean a little longer.

Those little moments have a way of becoming the memories you’ll treasure most.

This summer reminded me that the greatest gift isn’t how far we travel—it’s who we get to share the journey with.

I already know these trips will be some of my favorite memories of the year, and I’m so thankful for every mile, every conversation, and every moment that brought us here.
