I am so excited to share with you all about our latest kitchen project, that was a big hit when I first shared it on social media! Our kitchen trashcan on wheels hack has made all of the difference in cleanup for our family of six, and might be one of my favorite parts of our new kitchen!
Ever since we moved in, through renovation and lots of home projects, we have been customizing our home to be the perfect fit for our family. As a busy mom to four kids, having a cozy and functional home is incredibly important to me, and I love adding practical things around the house to make life feel simplified.

One of our latest home hacks has gone viral, and I am thrilled to share it with you! We added wheels to a large capacity kitchen trashcan, created a space where it can easily roll under the countertop, and had a custom hole cut in the top of the countertop so that we can throw trash out easily. It has been a game-changer in our kitchen, and we love how convenient it is for our family.
If you’re interested in trying out this hack for yourself, it’s actually pretty simple! All you need is the largest size trashcan that can fit under your counter, and some caster wheels. Screw the wheels onto the bottom of the trashcan, and make sure they are secure. If you want to simply have a can on hand like this for parties etc. that’s a great idea — it will take a bit more planning if you are wanting to integrate this feature into the layout and design of your kitchen…
If you are wanting to add this into your kitchen, you would first make plans for this in your cabinetry design. We added cabinet doors that swing open on the front so that it is simple to wheel the can in and out. They go all the way to the floor, which I find makes it much easier to just roll the trash rather than having to lift it up into a cabinet.
I also want to share with you some renovation tips, since I feel like we have become pros at planning for kitchen renovations — we have learned so much about what we need and how to make a renovation less of a pain. Though it still took a lot of patience and grace to make it through our big renovation!
Renovating a kitchen can be a daunting task, but it’s so worth it in the end. We have been thrilled with how our kitchen turned out and how it works for our family! Here are some ideas for redesigning and renovating a kitchen that we found helpful:
Open shelving can make a kitchen feel more open and airy. It’s also a great way to show off your favorite dishes and decor. We integrated this in our second kitchen area and in the hallway pantry area where I store a lot of our serve ware and pretty dishes.
Adding seating to your kitchen island can create a cozy gathering spot for family and friends. It’s also a great way to add extra counter space. We LOVE our island!
Pantry pullouts can maximize your storage space and make it easier to access your pantry items.
Good lighting is key in any kitchen. Adding task lighting under cabinets or pendant lights over an island can create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Also, as much natural light and window light as you can get! Adding in windows is one of the parts of our renovation that I felt made the biggest impact!
I hope these tips help you with your own kitchen renovation!
