This pantry was truly a vision inside of my mind, that it took renovating to become a reality! This room is a perfect example of making your home work for you, and having an open mind to what might be possible with different spaces in your home.
What was this space before, you ask? A downstairs bedroom. We weren’t in need of another bedroom in this area, what we did feel would work perfectly for us — a large walk in pantry space, with an extra sink, dishwasher, storage, room for countertop appliances and more.
Adding the beautiful large window over the sink was the cherry on top of this renovation, it lets such gorgeous light in, and really makes this pantry feel more like a second kitchen for us! I have a thing for kitchen sink windows, if you haven’t noticed yet 😉
I love the idea of a walk in pantry/ second kitchen/ butlers pantry if you have the space, for a home with small kiddos and also if you love to host a lot. If gives an area where dishes can go, platters can be assembled, messes can sort of hide out while your guests are over.
Of course, our kitchen will still be lived in and not always perfectly put together — but this added pantry space makes it that much easier. We also keep many of our countertop appliances in this space like the Kitchenaid mixer, the toaster, our Berkey water filter etc. This allows for less clutter in our main kitchen.
The extra cabinet space is a dream, and gives me so much room to keep everything organized! It’s also the perfect spot to store items that aren’t our everyday favorites. So that they have a storage spot, but it doesn’t get in the way of our regular everyday dishes, cups and glasses, cookware etc.
For organizing this space I collected canisters (both new and vintage) baskets, tiered wire baskets, jars, and bowls, items that I could store things like spices, tea, baking ingredients, pantry update wire shelves, and any other overflow that I might not need on an everyday basis, but want to keep handy!
So far this has been really functional for us. I’m so happy that we decided to give up a bedroom for this dreamy extra kitchen space. I think I will fully come to appreciate it when we host holidays and larger parties! It just gives so much room prepare food and to clean up from a gathering! And with a large family, sometimes just a Sunday dinner or a kiddo’s birthday can feel like a big gathering!
Whether you have room for a pantry update small, or even a simple pantry update diy — I highly recommend making whatever pantry space you might have more functional for the way that your family uses it most!

Casey Wiegand
