Our home renovation is continuing, and we are getting very excited for everything to come together, and for us to settle in more! We’ve spent a lot of time pouring over the details, making sure that this house becomes a home that feels like a reflection of our family!

Making Selections for Our New Home

I truly enjoy the creative process of making selections and seeing my vision become a reality! I’ve shared this before, but I honestly felt as though I could see our “after” the moment that I walked into our new house. I could just picture all of the potential that this home had, and everything that it could become. All of those larger details and the overall feel became very clear to me. Next, it was time to start to search for and source home items, to bring things full circle.

Lighting is such a critical part of the design process in a home. I always recommend that you take the time to select the lighting that will fit your home, and to recognize the impact that lighting can have. It can really change the entire feel of a space!

+ Have lighting on different levels.
So many people make the mistake of just using overhead lighting, for me this is the least flattering and inviting lighting. Of course, choose your overhead lights, but don’t forget sconces, table lamps, floor lamps, and even things like LED candles and twinkle lights on varying levels. You’d be amazed what adding a few well placed lights can do to a space!

+ Make a statement.
Even though overhead lighting on its own can be a bit harsh, I do LOVE to make a statement with ceiling fixtures and chandeliers. This is where you can go your most creative. I love having playful and whimsical chandeliers.

+ Scale matters.
Don’t go too small with your overhead lighting, otherwise it can become lost visually. Don’t be afraid to hang a larger scale chandelier over a dining room table or in your bedroom!

+ Add dimmer switches.
This is HUGE! I love overhead lighting a whole lot more when it can be dimmed and a bit more moody! I also love dimmer switches on wall sconces, seriously dreamy!

+ Stick with a theme/style/tone.
If you have the chance to, try to create a mood board for your lighting. Put all of the photos together of each fixture, and make sure that there is a cohesive feel. I think that mixing metals throughout different rooms is absolutely okay, but I do think that you should have a general theme or feel that runs through all of your lighting. Whether you are going for hallway lighting farmhouse, classic style, bohemian, modern — try to stick with one feel throughout! This really adds a more designer look.

Sconces strategically placed above art, or to highlight beautiful trimwork make such an impact. Dimmer switches are a lovely addition to hallway lighting whether in a main space or for hallway lighting ideas entrance halls. You can go with hallway lighting flush mount fixtures that are stationary and a bit lower profile, or add some drama with a sconce that is on a moveable swinging arm.
