Sometimes as mothers, we can feel like we are on autopilot. Making sure everyone is where they need to be, when they need to be there, with everything they need in hand. We are racing here and there and exhausted at the end of the day. It’s taken time, but I realized how intentional I need to be in my motherhood. I don’t want to miss out on the beauty of the small, everyday moments!
1. Starting the day with intention is crucial for me. I wake up before my kids, and soak in the quiet. I say a silent prayer as I gather myself. I want to feel centered before the hustle and bustle of the morning really gets going, and it’s amazing how even just a few minutes alone while everyone else is sleeping can help me to feel grounded and prepared. A good playlist, some twinkle lights and a dreamy diffuser blend will do wonders!
2. I am the keeper of the calendar. That means that I make sure we have space in our schedule to just be a family. It’s easy to feel pressure to fill up our days, and say yes to everything. Awhile back, I gave myself permission to say no to things. Not just for me, but for all of us. Because I am so protective of our family time – sweet time with just them is what I crave most, and leaving space for that in our days is a huge priority. I heard somewhere, when we say YES we ARE saying no to something else so a reminder that not are okay!!!
3. Helping my kids process their day, whether things were hard or great, is huge. I want to give them room to debrief and work through things. I want them to know that they have access to me always, and nothing is too big or too small to share. My hope is that I am teaching them not to just react to a situation, but take a minute to pause and process, and thoughtfully respond to whatever is going on.
4. No matter how many kids you have, whether it’s one or seven, I think taking time out to pour into them individually is such an important part of motherhood. For our family, that might just mean going on an errand alone with us, or painting a picture, or snuggling up to read a book. I think about each kiddo and what makes them special, what fills their tank, and I try to take time on a regular basis to connect with them one on one. Another thing that has been huge for us in this area is getting these little one on one dates scheduled on the calendar before the month begins! That way our days don’t pass so quickly and then suddenly another month has passed!
5. Reflection and self care are also such an important part of being a mama. While it isn’t hands on, it’s crucial to my ability to give my kids what they need, to pour out love and comfort when they need it most. Reflecting on my day and my time with them, and holding it with open hands. And taking time to unwind at the end of the day and practice self care – whether that’s a warm bath, or reading something that inspires me, it makes me better for them when the day begins again! Fill up your cup so that you can pour out!
