It’s been a big summer of travel—and Santa Barbara quickly stole my heart. This trip was extra special because it was part of a tradition we hold dear: when our kids turn 13, we take them on a one-on-one birthday trip—just mom and dad, no siblings. It’s a time to celebrate them, connect, and create memories that will last forever. Whether you’re planning a beachy escape with your family, a milestone trip like ours, or just craving some ocean air and sunshine, Santa Barbara is a dream come true. Nestled between the mountains and the sea, it feels like a postcard brought to life. I’m sharing my favorite family-friendly Santa Barbara travel guide, along with the coziest places to eat, shop, and simply be.
We kicked off one of our sweetest days with lunch at the stunning San Ysidro Ranch. Located in the hills above Montecito, it felt like stepping into a secret garden. Think lavender-lined walkways, dreamy patio seating, and food that tastes like it was made with love. Their dining patio is the perfect place to linger over lunch and soak in the peaceful mountain views.
Another favorite spot? Rosewood Miramar Beach. Right along the ocean, this gorgeous resort offers everything from fine dining at Caruso’s to more casual beach-front eats at Miramar Beach Bar. You’ll even find a Scoop Shop for poolside treats—yes, please!
If you love boutique shopping and charming strolls as much as I do, make time for Coast Village Road. It’s full of darling storefronts, cafes, and the kind of places that make you want to peek inside every window.
The Montecito Village Shopping Center is another great stop with more local shops, fun gifts, and spots to grab a coffee or snack between errands (or leisurely browsing).
Just a short drive away is Summerland, a tiny coastal town full of hidden gems. My favorite? Field + Fort—a beautifully curated mix of home goods, books, thoughtful gifts, and the yummiest café. We popped in for coffee and left with full hearts (and hands!).
Santa Barbara is incredibly family-friendly, making it the perfect getaway for all ages.
Lined with shops, restaurants, and lots of people-watching, it’s a must-visit.
This historic pier has everything from candy shops and fishing spots to oceanfront views that never get old.
