Being as organized as we could be for this move really has helped. There is so much out of our control, given the nature of us needing to leave our old house, and also just the timing and unpredictability of a big renovation. So, I made it a point to try to be intentional about the parts that are in my hands, to make things as smooth as possible. I’m sharing a few moving organization tips that really worked for us with staying organized for our big move! These work for moving organization tips apartments and moving organization tips houses alike!

Moving Organization Tips

1. Start with Things you use less Frequently.

Since it may be a multi day or multi-week process, remember not to pack up the things that you need most, too early! I started with things I knew we wouldn’t be needing at the end of living in our former home. Like winter clothes, decor items, anything that we would be sure to live without for a little while. This helped us to not feel too out of place at the beginning of our packing process.

2. Color Code by Room.

I love having a system and this one worked well for us. You can do a color or number system! I found color stickers was the easiest way to quickly visually see which box was meant for which room. Assign a color to each area or room in your new home and put the coordinating sticker onto your box once you pack it up. Whether you are moving boxes into your new house yourself, or if you are hiring movers, this is such a simple way to visually see where each box belongs!

3. Keep an Inventory of What is in Which Box.

If you’d like to get more detailed, consider also keeping a clipboard handy and jotting down a rough description of what is in each box. Next to each color sticker you can number your boxes. On the sheet of paper you can add a list in number order, and then box by box, write a short description of what is inside. This makes deciding what to unpack first a breeze!

4. Unpack in Reverse order/ Start with what you use MOST often

When it’s time to unpack, you’ll want to go in the reverse order of how you packed! Start with the boxes that have the most important items that you use most often. Getting these unpacked right away will really help you to settle into your new space. Even if unpacking is a multi day or multi week process, you’ll have what you use most ready when you need it! More moving organization tips closets would be a good beginning place I would start as well! When we have access to our clothes, we feel more at home and less jumbled right away!

Though moving can be challenging, with these moving organization tips in place I hope that you’ll find it to be a bit easier! We are so ready to be fully settled into our space, and we won’t soon forget this move and all that went into it!
