We are a family of animal lovers, and have lots of pets in our home. My girls have wanted a lionhead rabbit for as long as I can remember and spent lots of time thinking of lionhead bunny names, and even making a lionhead bunny drawing, so we were so excited to add one to our family.

We get many questions about ours, so I thought I would share some details on what to know before bringing a lionhead rabbit home….and let me tell you- they are SO SWEET!

Lionhead rabbits are adorably cute, they get their name from their fluffy mane like hair. They are small, and with the right environment and proper care they can be very friendly, and make great family pets.

Things to Know Before Getting a Lionhead Rabbit/ Lionhead Bunny Care

They typically live for about 8-9 years, so it’s important to know that they are a commitment. It’s helpful to know these details before taking on the responsibility of a new pet. They have so much love to give, and we are very happy with our decision to add a lionhead rabbit to our family!

Lionhead bunnies can be a bit timid and may scare easily. I think knowing this and having those conversations with your kiddos helps. We do our best to keep a calm and quiet environment when we have our rabbit out to play, we never want to spook them. We have also found them to be very cuddly and sweet!

Lionhead rabbits are active, and even though they are small, growing about 8-10 inches at adult size and between 2.5-3.5 lbs, they still require a big enough space to get the movement and they require. We took our time researching lionhead bunny house rabbit. It’s important that you house them in a moderate climate, they don’t do well with extreme temperatures.

Lionhead Bunny Care Tips

Lionheads require more grooming than typical rabbits. They can have what is called a double maned coat, so be sure to keep up with brushing and proper grooming, and talk to a groomer about a lionhead bunny haircut and how often they should be done.

One of the many positive attributes of lionhead rabbits is that they tend to be really good about potty training. As long as they have their designated spot, and you stay proactive about keeping their area cleaned up, you should not have much trouble! We try to clean up after our rabbit every couple of days, and we do a deeper clean once a week. We also clean their toys and food and water accessories.

Lionhead bunnies are smart and like to stay busy. We did some research on rabbit safe toys, ways that our kids could safely play with them, and the right type of environment to keep them in, with enough space to play. Often rabbits are kept in hutches or cages that are too small, so we made sure to research what would be the right size space for ours.

We have always always talked to our kids about being gentle with their pets, and since we have always had animals around they are very good with this. Lionhead rabbits are soft and cuddly, and make for sweet pets, but like many animals they can get upset if they feel they are in danger. Extra care to be especially gentle with them will ensure that they feel safe and are at ease with your family.

Find the best food for a safe diet of your lionhead. We avoid anything too sugary like fruits, and stick with leafy greens, grass hay, lots of water, and healthy food. We do MOSTLY hay ( that is the majority of their diet) , then one set of greens a day that we monitor and a small amount of pellets. Definitely do your research on types of greens and how much! And did you know? Carrots are actually like a piece of candy to your rabbit’s diet! So those are special treats not something they eat all day.

For such a small animal, it’s not uncommon for people to be unaware of the needs of lionhead rabbits, that is why I think it’s important to know as much as you can upfront, and to go in with both eyes open. We love our lionhead bunny and my girls are especially smitten! We hope you enjoy your sweet fluffy cuties too!
